Old IGA grocery store sold

ELKO - The old IGA grocery building and nearly six acres of property on Mountain City Highway and Cimarron Way has been sold for $3 million to Reno-based Route 225 Investments LLC.

The 40,000-square-foot IGA building has sat unoccupied for a number of years across from Smiths Food and Drug store on Mountain City Highway. It has had several owners since 1998. The previous owners, Reno-based Vaughn Industrial Park general partnership, owned the building since 2004.

According to records filed with the Nevada Secretary of State, officers for Route 225 Investments LLC include Dave Belding, a partner at the Hacienda Hotel and Casino in Reno; and Ward Chilton, former senior vice-president for North American sales for Reno-based International Game Technologies.

Neither Belding or Chilton could be reached for comment before presstime.

The managing partner of Vaughn Industrial Park, Stephen Romero, said he could not disclose details of the sale. However, he said he felt that the property has “a lot of opportunity for someone to put a nice development there.”

Romero said Vaughn Industrial Park had originally intended to lease the property out to national retailers. He said they were in the process of getting it leased out when they decided that selling the property was a better option.

Vaughn Industrial Park and the Builders Mart on Mountain City Highway share common ownership.

The IGA grocery building is located at 1669 Mountain City Highway. It was built in 1984 as a Safeway store.
