Elko County Commission: UNR report on mining’s impact to be heard

ELKO — Elko County Commissioners will review a report by the University of Nevada, Reno, University Center for Economic Development regarding the economic impact of the mining industry in Elko County at a Thursday meeting.

The report is titled “An Analysis of the Economic Impacts of the Hard Rock Mining Sector on the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area.”

Commissioners will also discuss issues related to the revision of the federal 1972 Mining Law.

Because of the Nevada Association of Counties meeting held this week at the Elko Convention Center, commissioners will meet only on Thursday. The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Elko County Courthouse.

In other action, commissioners will:

- Consider requesting assistance from the Nevada Attorney General to assist the district attorney’s office in the prosecution of William Goff. Goff was arrested Sept. 5 and is charged with two counts of lewdness with a child, 10 counts of sexual assault and 16 counts of using a minor in the production of pornography.

- Discuss radio communications issues related to emergency and law enforcement communication in Elko County and northern Nevada.

- Hold a public hearing regarding medium-term financing for a telecommunications system at the sheriff’s office.

- Hold a public hearing regarding the 2008 Community Development Block Grant Program.

- Discuss the new county office building project.

- Discuss county water resource issues, specifically the Southern Nevada Water Authority pipeline project and Central Nevada Regional Water Authority activities and issues.

- Consider using the savings from the 2006-2007 budget year for a community service position for the Elko County Juvenile Probation Department.

- Consider authorization of a trustee property auction of delinquent tax properties Nov. 2.

- Consider giving support for a Nevada State Lands Question 1 grant application for a Conservation Easement for the Boyd Ranch, located east of Elko in the Halleck area.

- Discuss options regarding development, operation and management of the Railport and Industrial Park.

- Hear a report regarding the Highway Department Operational Report and routine road maintenance issues.
