Wolverines claim MVP titles

West Wendover's Danika Sharp, left, and Jared Lewis were named Southern 2A baskeball players of the year. (Submitted)

WEST WENDOVER - Even though the 2007-08 basketball season is long gone and the spring sports are well under way, there is still much to be said about both the girls and boys basketball teams at West Wendover High.

History was made this season as scoring records were broken and double MVP honors were given to two of the Wolverine basketball standouts - Jared Lewis and Danika Sharp.

Lewis, a senior, and the sophomore Sharp were both awarded the league MVP award for the 2A South Region at the division playoffs.

The accolades do not stop there. Both players were awarded first team all-state recognition. Sharp and Lewis also broke several school and state records.

Lewis ended his high school career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,571 points, all-time assists leader with 328 and all-time leader in steals with 242. Lewis also holds the record for most points in a game with 49 against The Meadows and 36 in the first half. He had 10 3-pointers in this game.

Lewis is No. 16 for most points scored in a career in Nevada. He was also named to the McDonalds All-American team and is currently considering several offers to play basketball at various colleges.

Sharp found her way into the state record book in five different categories. She scored 653 points this season, putting her in fourth place in the state high school record book for points scored in a single season.

Sharp worked her way into second place in the record books in the categories of most free throws attempted in a single season with 209, just four shy of the first-place holder. She is also second for most free throws made in a game with 17, just one shy of the state record and is in second place for most steals in a season with 115.

Sharp is now the current record holder for most free throws made in a season with 153, beating the old record of 130.

According to Max Preps, a nationwide Internet-based web site sponsored by CBS Sports, Sharp and Lewis are among the nation's best players. Not all high schools keep track of their team stats and submit them to Max Preps, but a large majority of them do.

Based on the stats submitted, Lewis finished the season as the No. 2 player in the category of points and assists in the state, No. 1 in 3-pointers and No. 4 in steals. He was also listed 60th in the nation in the scoring catagory.

Sharp was listed second in the state in scoring, fifth in 3-pointers and sixth in assists. She is listed as 32nd in the nation in scoring.
