Museum presents last ‘Night at Museum'

ELKO - The fifth and final presentation in the “A Night at The Museum” series is called “Project Lifesaver” and will be presented by local engineer Mark Chilton.

The free presentation on Elko's historic railroads is at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Both east and west railroads went through downtown Elko. The westbound went between Railroad and Commercial Street and the eastbound went down the middle of Silver Street. As the town got bigger and Spring Creek came into existence, it became a real problem. Traffic was always backed up and there were lots of wrecks.

The Federal Highway Act of 1973 provided money from the federal government to cities that wanted to re-locate the tracks out of town, and Elko applied. Construction began in 1978.

For information, please call the museum at 738-3418.
