Teens die in rollover near Winnemucca

ELKO - Early this morning two teenagers from the McDermitt area died and another was injured in a rollover accident about 70 miles north of Winnemucca on Highway 95.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. when the driver of a red pickup lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, ejecting the three occupants who were reportedly not wearing seatbelts, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Two of the teens were ejected into the roadway and at least one was struck by a passing motorist, Sgt. Greg Johnson said.

It was not clear if he died as a result of the accident or being struck by the vehicle, the NHP reported.

The survivor was transported to Humboldt County General Hospital and airlifted to a Reno hospital.

Names of the victims have not been released, though it is believed at least some of the occupants are American Indians because the Bureau of Indian Affairs is helping with the investigation.

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office is also involved with the investigation.
