Blackjack Challenge Video

ELKO - Those who opened their mouths the widest leading up to Monday's Blackjack Challenge are reaching for the two-ply in the wake of Double Ply's big win.

Double Ply won this year's Nevada Blackjack Challenge, bringing a $3,000 purse to Let It Ride Stables and a year's worth of bragging rights.

According to syndicate member Dawn Leyva, this is the syndicate's first victory. She has been a member for the past five years.

Leyva said the posturing by Bill Wines of Misfits Stables in the days leading up to the big race “makes it even sweeter.”

For the local syndicates, it's all about bragging rights.

“Our horse has all the attributes needed to smoke the other eight syndicates,” Wines was quoted in the Aug. 22 front-page story, “Wines predicts win.”

The action in Monday's race was intense. A majority of the horses were neck and neck at the last turn.

Leyva said Double Ply started out slow in the middle of the pack and didn't kick in until three-quarters of the way in the home stretch.

“It definitely makes for a great last day at the fair,” Leyva said.
