SPRING CREEK - Not often do all the high schools in Elko County convene for a sporting event. The schools, which range from 4A Elko to a handful of 1A schools, usually don't compete together because of the discrepancy in competition.
But Wednesday, they did.
Every cross country program in Elko County was represented at Spring Creek High for the Spartans' 2008 home meet. The turnout - 83 boys and 56 girls - may have been the largest in the history of the event and the level of competition was top notch.
Elko won both the boys and girls team competitions and the Tribe's Eric Sandall was the boys individual champion. Spring Creek's Kristen Rampton won the girls race on the roughly three-mile hilly course behind the high school.
“We like hills and that's one of the benefits of being where we're at,” said Elko coach Cody Krenka. “We always complain about sports facilities when it comes to athletics. But in northeast Nevada, we definitely have the best sports facilities for cross country.”

Elko's depth proved to be the difference in the team contests. The Tribe's girls finished with a score of 31, well ahead of second-place Spring Creek (60) and third-place Lowry (60). The Lady Spartans were awarded second based on a sixth-runner tiebreaker.
The Elko boys scored a 36, ahead of Lowry (58), Spring Creek (107) and Dayton (117). Carlin (128), Independence (148), West Wendover (228) and Wells (271) also garnered team scores in the boys race.
“Cross country is a lot like playing poker,” Krenka said. “You have to have five good cards, and today we did.”
Sandall, a top 4A runner in the state, had little trouble along the way to his victory in 18 minutes, 25 seconds. The junior said he felt pressure the first half of the race but pulled away in the latter stages.
The toughest climb of the course - a run up to the letters “SC” on the hill overlooking Spring Creek High - provided Sandall an opportunity to gauge his followers. Just before the hill peaks the course takes a U-turn and allows competitors to run downhill alongside others running up.
“It was a pretty hard course,” Sandall said. “The downhills are really steep. It was pretty fun. My feet were pretty sore. Your feet would hit really hard (on the downhills) and with my light shoes, my feet were really sore.”
The second-place runner was Elko's Alex Martinez (19:03) and Spring Creek's Ben Stephens finished third in 19:19. Carlin's Matt Ahearn turned in an impressive 19:35 to lead the contingent of runners from 1A schools.
Rampton also finished with a comfortable cushion as she crossed the finish line in 23:53. Lowry's Erin Tattersall was second (24:35) and her teammate Jenae Neu was third (25:13). Elko's top runner - Jessica Smith - was fourth in 25:23.
“I was quite nervous actually,” Rampton said. “There was a lot of people I know here. I think it's the most difficult course so far. It was important to me. It hasn't really sunk in, but it's neat to win.”
After Wednesday's unofficial county championship, the schools go their different ways and pursue their respective goals. Several will compete Friday in Carlin, but for one day they were all together.
“I was astounded (with the turnout),” said Spring Creek coach Paul Allen. “It was a big day. It was three times what we had last year. It was good.
“I think it's getting clear that we've got a good shot to make state championships with both teams. It's not going to be easy. The Dayton boys are pretty good. It will be fun. We should qualify both.”
