Elko City Council: Execs request room minimum for game licensees

ELKO - Elko City Council meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday to consider a letter from several local hotel and casino executives recommending new requirements for all new non-restricted gaming licensees to include a minimum of 75 hotel rooms.

A letter addressed to City Manager Curtis Calder and signed by Mike Hachquet of Gold Dust West, David Zornes of Play Elko (Red Lion), Ruben Abeyta of Hilton Garden Inn and Sean Mowray of Holder Hospitality cited a downturn in statewide gaming and noted ordinances passed in Clark and Washoe counties that require new facilities there to have a minimum of 201 rooms. Carson City requires a minimum of 100 rooms to obtain a non-restricted gaming license.

The letter stated the required hotel rooms would generate gaming revenue from tourists, as well as generate taxable revenue from hotel, food and beverage sales.

Other items for consideration include:

- Acceptance of the Fifth Street construction project.

" I don't know about any one else in this town, but I for one am getting tired of every time I turn around there is a new place to gamble or drink. What about something for the youth to keep them out of trouble? What about some where actually decent to eat or shop? Then lets not forget our local you know what places of interest, right behind our great basque resteraunts. I enjoy the food not the view with my kids at hand. "
