ELKO — An Elko man with an extensive criminal record was arrested early Monday morning by a police officer on multiple counts of auto burglary.
Elko police Lt. Richard Genseal said an officer was patrolling the area of A and Court streets because of a recent report of an auto burglary in that area. The officer noticed a flash of light in a parked car and went to investigate it.
The officer reported he saw John McLean Tilley, 44, of Elko sitting in the driver’s seat with a knife and a flashlight. He also had the faceplate of the car’s stereo pried off and there was damage around the stereo as if he’d tried to pry it out, Genseal said.
The car did not belong to Tilley.
Upon searching Tilley, the officer found other items that were stolen from other cars, as he later found through his investigation, Genseal reported. In total, Tilley was charged with six counts of burglary.

Genseal said some car windows in the vicinity had been broken and the cars rifled through. People who owned those cars were connected to the items in Tilley’s possession, he said.
Tilley was charged with six counts of burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of stolen property. His bail is $34,500. Genseal said there may be additional charges as more burglary victims are identified.
In 2002, Tilley was arrested in another incident involving a car. Tilley was sought by area law officers in connection to an assault. Sheriff’s Lt. Carl Cox saw Tilley in the area of South Sixth Street and stopped to arrest him. Tilley ran from the deputy around some buildings and managed to get into the deputy’s cruiser and speed off. In the process, Tilley struck Deputy Billy Hood, causing minor injuries. Cox was a deputy at the time, and is now the lieutenant of the jail.
Tilley was later arrested Oct. 31, 2002, for resisting officers, battery with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle theft, malicious destruction of county property and various traffic offenses.
He was in prison from Dec. 16, 2005, to Oct. 27, 2008, a little more than a year ago before he was arrested again Monday.
Tilley was serving time for burglary.

This article is wrong tho, Tilley was arrested about 3 months ago for DUI, no license, no proof of registration and a couple others I can't remember. Wrecked a very nice car belonging to people who were trying to help him out financially, with his job and also with a place to stay, he paid them back by taking out their $30,000 car and totalling it, way to go!!!!
