Band of Indians places third at UNR

ELKO — Elko High School’s Band of Indians placed third for the Governor’s Cup at the Sierra Band Crusade Marching Band Competition Saturday at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Sixteen high school marching bands from Nevada participated.

Elko High finished second in the medium band division by six-tenths of a point and placed third in the competition for the Governor’s Cup. Elko band members were also recognized with the outstanding music award in the medium band division.

McQueen High School from Reno won the Governor’s Cup for the 11th time.

The Band of Indians has won the cup 12 times, finished second 14 times and has never placed lower than fifth.

The UNR Sierra Band Crusade Marching Band Competition has been held for 30 years and awards the Governors Cup to the highest scoring band from Nevada each year. The Band of Indians is the only band that has performed in the competition every year.

The ensemble will peform during the Veterans Day Parade this week in Elko and their annual “Pass In Review” begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Elko Convention Center.

Director of Bands Walt Lovell thanks band parents, community members, Elko alumni Tai Smith and Sara Connors, who are volunteer coaches for the color guard, and Alicia Westmoreland, who coaches the drum line, for their continued support.
